{"id":41,"date":"2025-11-20T14:58:59","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T11:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dosalaosolo.com.br\/?p=41"},"modified":"2025-11-22T13:47:06","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T10:47:06","slug":"what-is-available-energy-and-why-does-it-matter-more-than-protein-or-gross-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dosalaosolo.com.br\/en\/what-is-available-energy-and-why-does-it-matter-more-than-protein-or-gross-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"What is \u201cAvailable Energy\u201d and Why Does it Matter More Than Protein or Gross Energy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the field, there is much talk about protein, minerals, NDT (Total Digestible Nutrients), and gross energy.<br>But we almost never discuss the element that truly determines herd performance: <strong>available energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Available energy is not what is stated on the label.<br>It&#039;s not what&#039;s in the forage.<br>And that&#039;s not what&#039;s calculated in the spreadsheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Available energy is what <strong>it actually reaches the metabolism<\/strong> and can be transformed into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>grazing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rumination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>displacement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>thermoregulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immunity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#039;s the energy that the animal is actually able to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this metric \u2014 silent, profound, and practical \u2014 is worth more than any traditional number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Energy exists at three levels: gross, metabolizable, and available.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gross energy (GE)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the total amount of energy present in the food.<br>It&#039;s theoretical, and practically useless for real-world analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Metabolizable energy (ME)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the part that the animal is able to absorb after losses during digestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Available energy (ED)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#039;s what <em>leftover<\/em> after the body uses energy to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>digest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>adjust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to correct<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compensate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintain temperature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dealing with impurities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>normalize metabolism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I.e:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote quote-solid is-layout-flow wp-block-quote quote-solid-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Available energy = metabolizable energy \u2013 energy used to compensate for imbalances.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#039;s why two animals can eat the same food \u2014 and deliver completely different results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. The biggest energy thief is imbalance.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An animal expends energy when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The salt is not pure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The metabolism is unstable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rumination is not flowing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>there is heat stress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the water is not suitable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The soil returns poor matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>behavior fluctuates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handling generates noise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each microcorrection costs energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And all the energy used to fix things isn&#039;t being used to produce anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The farm is losing performance. <em>without realizing<\/em> \u2014 not due to a lack of food, but due to a lack of available energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Protein doesn&#039;t solve the energy problem \u2014 and sometimes it makes it worse.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Protein is essential, but it alone cannot compensate for a lack of available energy.<br>Worse: excess protein <strong>increases the energy cost of metabolism<\/strong>, Because it demands more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>excretion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>filtration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>heat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ruminal regulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the herd is expending energy to &quot;burn excess protein,&quot; the available energy decreases even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#039;s why so many producers say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c&quot;My diet is good, but the cattle aren&#039;t producing enough.&quot;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It pays off \u2014 he&#039;s just expending energy on something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Available energy is what defines behavior.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When an animal has enough energy available, it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>graze more<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rests less<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ruminates better<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>moves in a pattern<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintains a stable temperature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>expresses calm and functional behavior<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>returns richer matter to the soil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When he doesn&#039;t have it, he:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>stay still<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>alternates between moments of agitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>has irregular rumination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>changes schedules<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consumes unpredictably<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>loses synchronization with the batch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Behavior is the living expression of available energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. The energy cycle depends on the purity of the base.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The system&#039;s foundation begins with salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When minerals are pure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>there is less electrochemical noise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cellular hydration improves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>absorption is more efficient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>metabolism stabilizes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the animal wastes less energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rumination flows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the behavior becomes constant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When they are not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the body goes into compensation mode<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>available energy drops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gains slow down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The soil receives poor matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the pasture feels the return<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The purity of the mineral determines the quality of the energy circulating in the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Available energy is also energy from the ground.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The soil also has its own available energy \u2014 measured by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>microbial activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>decomposition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>infiltration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aggregation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>root depth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pasture vigor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If metabolism returns rich matter, the soil operates with high available energy.<br>If poor-quality matter is returned, the soil operates at a deficit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The energy of the herd and the energy of the soil are two sides of the same coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7.
